Spray and Pray: A Z-6 WIP

Well, I’ve decided that with two clones and only one DC-15 that it is time to add to the arsenal. The new piece is the Z-6 Rotary Blaster Cannon. There are two models of this blaster: Clone Wars (in my sig banner) and the new Clone Wars. I’m making the later, which is pictured below.



Everything that I need are these misc PVC and parts obtained from Lowes:



The WIP begins.

On the barrels and receivers, I’ll be cutting these down to make the end result more manageable for troops. The barrels will be cut down to to 17 or 18 inches. The receiver will be cut down slightly to 20 inches; at the last blue line and a few inches on the other end. Oh and I might have to adjust some vent holes (as seen in the picture).

Not pictured is the coil element for insided the barrels. That will be made from a flexible drainage pipe.

I'll be adding a casing to the receiver and making the circles for the barrels this week. The sight rail, the handles, and the magazine are planned for this weekend. Currently, there are no plans to add electronics.

I've made some progress this week on the Z-6. I've shorten the barrels, determine the coil element position, encased the receiver, begun fixing three of the vent holes, and had started the "round" pieces. However, when I was using my scroll saw, the "panel" wasn't solid as I thought and split in half. Lets just say that piece is now in the waste basket and I won't get those 2 hours back.

Tomorrow, I'm going to complete the round pieces for a total of 4. Then I'm going to start filling in the receiver casing.

Here's the correct condition:

Test template for the barrel setup.


Coil Element for inside the barrels.


Shorter barrels.


Casing for the receiver. This was glued in place, the cure time is 48 hours.


Round pieces.

I got some more work done on the Z-6. Oh and I found out that there's a third model with 7 barrels. A Z-7 maybe? This photo from SW.com shows the 6 and the 7 barrel models (lower left hand side). In addition, this is my reference photo.

Currently, I'm focusing more on if I can actually build it and make it look right. However, since I'm building it in sections I think I can add that "spin" setup.

Here's the current status of the Z-6. You'll noticed in the below photos that there are two green pieces of ABS. Those are the bottom halves of two sewer grates that I picked up from Lowes.

You'll notice some blocks inside the green ABS circle. Those are part of the grate and the reason why I picked those pieces. It took the guess and measuring work out of the barrel placement. The screws will be removed, only needed for placement.

There is a downside to using those grates. They're about the same size as my receiver, which places the barrels off for the use of a lighting system mounted in the receiver. However, I've got a solution for that. A spinning light... but more on that later.

To finish the business end, I have the drainage tube that will make the inner coil unit. I also have two 4 inch pipe caps, which will be used to attach the inner coil. The lower grate will have a wood circle inserted and one cap mounted to it. The other will be mounted to an additional barrel ring. All of that will make it a seperate section for the barrels; easier for transport and will assist in making this spin.

Here's the two sections together, but not yet attached and not leveled. The height is 39 inches.



I broke the lower wood piece and there is a red clamp securing it until the glue dries. Also the coil in the middle isn't mounted or cut to size yet, its only placed there for the photo.

Forgot to add this: The upside to using those grate pieces is that they help to keep the barrels screen accurate. You'll notice in the following photo that the barrels are slightly higher than the receiver.

I came across a "front-end" view reference photo over on SW.com. I'll need to make the "edged" round pieces that are by the vent holes again. Mainly, to make them a bit rounder and larger as soon.



Couple of hours tomorrow and I should have all three "round" pieces finished.

Well I got some work done today. My brother-in-law had some spare wood at his house, which is going to work perfectly for those "round pieces". I have marked out the four squares with 10 inch circles. Those circles will be cut down as needed, but probably no shorter than 9 inches. The fourth circle is a spare part. I'll get some pics of that up later on. edit picture added



Tip of the day for those using a table saw. When cutting out the fourth square, don't let the blade snag on the wood. That blade is moving at 3,450 rpms or greater depending on the model. If you're standing there, the wood launches and it will hit you. It hurts and may even knock you to the ground. You'll then probably stop working for the rest of the day. Oh and it then leaves a lovely bruise the same width of the section of thrown wood; as in my case on the your stomach.

Going to find more ice now.

A lot has been going on this week, but I finally managed to get back to working on this wip.

The three squares cut with a six inch hole. (If I have started this here, the circle pieces would fit into the receiver openings.)


Test fitted each hole on the receiver (six inch pipe).


Template made for the barrels and then transfered to wood. (The store only had 8 inch foam.)


Circles completed and sanded.


This metal pipe (lighter than abs) will be used to complete the lower receiver. To enclose the opening.

The receiver base mounts. Made from some spare wood left over from my old stairs, which I didn't realize I still had laying around. I've three pieces at 3" by 6" inches 1 cm. 1/2 cm on both sides.

Top view: (Note the blue tape marks what I need to cut off from the receiver casing to make it flush.)


Very Import Part. This is the piece needed to mount the barrels to the receiver. This is also needed if you want the barrels to spin. The pencil marks are what I need to cut off to make it fit inside the green pieces.


VIP: Cut to size and in place.


Another important piece. Needed for inside the receiver. When looking through the vent holes it prevents hollow look in the receiver. The hole matches the hole for the VIP, which is needed to make it spin.

Barrels mounted with a bolt to the receiver. The first circle piece is secured to the barrels. The second circle piece is held in place with duct tape for the photo (drill battery is recharging).
